day-by-day87tips:

  • DRINK A LOT OF WATER. Water is your best friend when you want to lose weight because it’s calorie-free and it helps you feel full. Some girls are scared to drink water because it adds water weight, but if you don’t drink enough water, your body’s water retention will actually increase. If you drink a lot, you’re going to go to the bathroom a lot and get rid of it anyways. Plus, it’s great because it refreshed your system and keeps your body happy
  • GREEN TEA. Or any tea, really! Tea just has this amazing way of making you full, even though there are no calories at all! Don’t be fooled though - if you go to a coffee shop and get chai tea, it’s loaded with milk and cream and calories - I am talking about tea bags that you just get from the grocery store and put in hot water. Don’t add sugar or milk - leave it as it is, and you will have a warm, filling cup of calorie-free goodness - and it’s guilt free, so you can drink cup after cup! I have an electric tea kettle which I keep right next to me at my desk, so whenever I get cravings or my stomach starts growling, I just boil up some water and have a cup of tea. Electric tea kettles are fairly cheap ($35) and have really saved my life.
  • CHEW AND SPIT. This is by far one of the biggest tips I have for anyone who wants to lose weight. I am a person who loves food, and I know many of us do…so I do eat what I want, but I just don’t swallow it! You have to be smart, though - this is hard to do with foods like ice cream, yogurt, etc. that are easily swallowed on accident. My favorite chew/spit menu item is tuna fish on saltine crackers with a little bit of hot sauce on each bite - I try to chew each cracker 15 times and then I spit it into a tupperware container. By chewing each bite at least 15 times, your brain receives “full” signals, even though you’re not swallowing a single calorie! I cannot recommend this enough to everyone - maybe people who love food think they have to resort to bullemia because they cannot go through with starvation, but this is the answer to the problem - chew what you want, and spit it out, and when the meal is done, you will definitely feel more full than before you started. I guarantee it!
  • WEIGH YOURSELF EVERY DAY. There are a lot of people who will say this is a bad idea because weight fluctuates on a daily basis. However, I have found it so helpful in my journey with ana. I have a wall calendar that I write my weight on every morning and I can look back at the progress I’ve made and feel good about myself. Definitely strip down when you weigh yourself and make sure to go to the bathroom before you do. Some sites recommend you only weigh yourself every week or so, but if you weigh every day, you can keep yourself on track and notice upward trends and stop them before they continue!
  • REWARD YOURSELF! And don’t use food as your reward - that’s just going to erase all of your hard work. If you lose a size, go get yourself a new pair of jeans. If you decide you want to try the tea trick, go get yourself an electric tea kettle. If you want to be more feminine, reward yourself with a new haircut, a new nail polish, or a new eye shadow! You deserve it. Look around you at all the people with no self-control over food - they are letting their hunger and the smell of greasy food take over - and then step back and look at yourself. You are taking control of your life. You are not going to let yourself turn into a freakin’ cow. You deserve to reward yourself every so often for being a true ana! I like to set a weight goal every month - I try to lose at LEAST a pound every week, and if I reach it, I usually do something nice for myself.
  • KEEP A FOOD JOURNAL. Write down EVERYTHING you eat, even if you are ashamed of it, and how many calories it was. This will help you take a step back and realize what might be holding you back from your weight loss goals. At the end of the day, total up your calories. If I go over my ‘calorie limit’ that I set for myself, I am usually very strict the next day. It’s a good way to keep youself in check and also to track progress.
  • DIET COKE…is god’s gift to Anas around the world!!! No calories, no sugar, no fat, no anything! Diet Coke is just as good, if not better, than tea for creating that false full feeling, especially because it’s carbonated and that bubbly feeling in your stomach will keep you satisfied for a while. I try to drink one for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but it’s great for anyone who just needs to fight off those between-meal cravings. It’s sweetened with aspartame, which is undergoing research because some people think it may not be healthy, but hey, whatever it takes to be thin!
  • TAKE A MULTIVITAMIN. If you take one, make sure you take it with some sort of food, otherwise, it won’t even be absorbed in your body. Of course, being thin is the main goal, but if you can take a calorie-free vitamin and reduce your risks of osteoporosis, anemia, etc., then why not do that little favor for your body? Drink lots of water with it and extra calcium never hurts.
  • 1 DAY ON, 2 DAYS OFF. This is my ritual, and I have seen HUGE results with it. Basically, you set yourself a calorie limit (mine is about 300 calories per day), and allow yourself to eat one day, and then fast for 2 days. It can get really hard, and everyone slips up sometimes, but by doing this, I have lost 7 pounds this month. Fasting cleanses your body and soul. Fasting makes you feel strong and empowered, because even though the person sitting next to you has really yummy smelling food and you sometimes wish you weren’t fasting, you have more power than them and you are doing something that most people couldnt even dream of doing. That makes you a superwoman! The second day can get really hard…try not to stand up too fast because dizziness and fainting can happen. I find it really hard to study or get anything productive done on day 2, but day one is always easy once you get used to the routine. Good luck!
  • EAT PAPER. Yeah, it sounds gross, but do you ever just want to chew on something? It doesn’t have to be food! Paper is a good option because it keeps your chewing going and it’s not fattening or anything. I have tried and tried again to look up the calorie content in paper, but I can’t find anything on the internet. I am sure it is very minimal, if anything.
  • WATCH THINSPO VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE WHILE YOU EAT. This is really helpful for me because I think twice before I go for seconds…in fact, it eliminates that idea altogether. I love youtube’s thinspo videos because they have some great pics and some great songs to go along with them. “Pieces of Me” by Ashlee Simpson is my perosnal favorite because you can interpret the lyrics to match exactly how most girls feel about ana.
  • PUT A MIRROR NEXT TO YOUR DESK or wherever you spend most of your time. This is great because you can always check up on yourself, compliment yourself, or tell yourself you need to get back on track.
  • AVOID MIA. I want to support all the women and men out there with bullemia, but I do feel that ana, if you can handle the lack of food, is MUCH more effective and healthy than mia. Firstly, when you swallow food, it immediately starts to be digested by your intestines…so even if you purged, your body still absorbed some of those calories. Also, shoving a toothbrush or other object down your throat to purge can actually hurt the back of your throat, not to mention the stomach acid that comes up in the process, melting the enamel from your teeth. I don’t want to preach about this, because there are plenty of those websites out there, but I would hope that anyone with mia give ana a try… no one likes the feeling of throwing up anyways.
  • KEEP JUNK OUT OF YOUR CUPBOARDS. This is pretty simple - just don’t buy food that is high in calories! My cupboard consists of Campbell’s vegetarian vegatable soup, tuna and saltines (for chew and spit purposes only), cornflakes, and some other random canned foods (which I would never eat) just in case my parents or friends come over so that I don’t look like I’m starving myself. In my fridge, I have 2 cases of Diet Coke, lettuce, lemon juice, celery and broccoli. That’s it. I don’t buy ice cream, saying that I’ll only eat a bite and then throw it away. I don’t buy cookies just to have them “just in case”. Simply don’t buy those things, and you won’t eat them! I like to make a list before I go to the store of things I want for the week, and I know the calorie content in each food item precisely.
  • SALAD, CORNFLAKES, BEANS, and VEGGIES! Ok, salad. Lettuce is virtually calorie-free. You can eat an entire head of iceburg lettuce and you’ll only be 100 calories in the hole! And who eats an entire head anyways (although that would be a good daily diet plan!)? Salads are awesome if you just have lettuce and a bit of ranch. And here’s my secret with ranch: buy a bottle of the lowest fat dressing you can find. Bring it home, dump half of it out, and fill it back up with water. Shake it up really well, and you’ve got half the calories than you would have consumed regularly, with the same ranchy taste!!! I like to add very low fat croutons to my salad, too, just for some added fun. Cornflakes - if you buy the Kellog’s brand, they are only 100 calories per 1 1/2 cups! That’s enough to fill you up completely. Add half a cup of skim milk, and that’s 120 calories and a full stomach! Beans - this is a fun and VERY low cal recipe - get a bag of dry beans of your choice (I personally prefer black beans), throw them in a CrockPot or just a big pot with about 8 cups of water. Add a bunch of whatever veggies you like - onions, garlic, green onions, mushrooms, and celery are my favorites. Throw everything in the pot, add some lemon and lime juice, and let it sit right below boiling for a few hours. If you divide your pot into about 10 portions, that’s about 55 calories per bowl! And it is VERY filling. Any kind of veggie is very good to snack on as well - broccoli and celery are both great because they are almost calorie free, and rumor has it, they are both “negative calorie” foods, which means they require your body more energy when burning them than they actually provide in calories. Woo!
  • WEAR AN ANA BRACELET. Having an ana bracelet reminds you throughout the day of your goals. I read somewhere that a red bracelet is the ‘ana color’ and maybe other anas out there will recognize that and give you a smile . I had one for a while and I really liked it because like I said, it reminded me of my goals throughout the day, and in a way, it kinda put a label on me, like a dog tag, and made me realize that my weight loss ideas were not just a joke - that was part of my lifestyle and I would hold true to that.
  • BUY CLOTHES THAT DON’T QUITE FIT - the tight squeeze from your too-small jeans will remind you that food is not going to help you fit into your new clothes! This is better to do with jeans than with shirts, though, because too-tight shirts can show off rolls and other unsightly things you may not want the whole world checking out.
  • LET YOUR CONFIDENCE GO UP WITH EVERY POUND YOU LOSE. Sometimes it’s hard to stay positive and upbeat when ana is such a big part of your life…but the thinner you are, the happier you should be. This doesn’t mean that you should be depressed until you reach size zero - basically, be proud of the new you! Thin is beautiful in this society, so if you are getting thinner and thinner, flaunt that and let your confidence fly girl! I know this sounds terrrrrrrrrrible, but when you see fat people doing nothing about their weight, pat yourself on the back! You have self control and you are doing something about your weight…and then there’s that cow in Carl’s Junior who is bingeing a milkshake with her burger and fries… and even though that burger and fries may sound delicious, you aren’t giving in to the food - you have control.
  • EXERCISE. This one is pretty obvious, but can be hard when you have no energy for your body to run off of. I have lost all of my weight without exercising at the gym, but walking to work or class can make a difference, even if it seems minimal. Always take the stairs - just remember that every step is making a difference, even if it’s hard.
  • TAKE PICTURES OF YOUR PROGRESS! This is a great way to see the progress you’ve made. Sometimes, when your life starts to get wrapped up in ana, it’s hard to step back and see that you’ve actually transformed your body, aside from the number on the scale. Also, having pictures of the “old you” will make you totally grossed out and never ever want to get back to that old fat body you used to carry around!
  • TRY TO AVOID ALCOHOL. Alcohol has a huge calorie content, and before you know it, you’ve had 4 mixed drinks and you’re reaching for the next one. There is about 84 calories in one glass of white table wine, 60 calories per shot of vodka or rum, and that doesn’t include any mixers or chasers … just keep that in mind… for the ‘price’ of 3 mixed drinks, you could eat 3 homemade chocolate chip cookies! Is it really worth the drunkness?
  • KEEP YOUR BATHROOM SCHEDULE IN MIND. Gross topic, but ana can lead to constipation because, well, there’s simply not a lot of food in there, so instead of coming out, it gets very hard and very plugged up. If it’s been a few days since you’ve gone #2, take a laxative (don’t exceed the recommended dosage on the bottle) - not going to the bathroom for days and days can end up in a trip to the hospital… plus, getting that old food out of your body only contributes to weight loss!
  • MAKE PHYSICAL GOALS INSTEAD OF NUMBER GOALS. Basically, don’t let the scale rule your life, because once you get to that magical number goal you set for yourself, your body may not look the way you imagined it would. Instead, decide what changes you would like to see in your body, and make those goals realistic. For example, I was 145 pounds when ana came into my life… and I decided that someday I would reach 120 pounds. Well, I am 120 pounds currently, and I am still unhappy with my results. My new goals are simple - I want to see a large gap between my legs - much bigger than the existing gap, and I would like to loose all of that arm flab that giggles when you wiggle your arm. With those goals in mind, I can track my progress physically as well. I also love my ribs, and the more they show, the happier I am! Instead of saying that 120 isn’t good enough and I want 115, why not just set those physical goals and whatever weight you are when you reach them is a good weight for you!
  • PEPPERMINT - Get an oil burner (the little dish above a tea candle that holds scented oils), and buy some peppermint oil. Peppermint is a natural smell that actually decreases appetite, and it makes your room smell great in the process!
  • BRUSH YOUR TEETH - Having a minty mouth also fights off cravings. Since it tastes so clean and fresh, it makes that bite of whatever sound less appetizing.
  • DON’T DRINK ALL YOUR CALORIES AWAY! A Starbucks white chocolate mocha is almost 400 calories! That’s more than most anas eat in an entire day, and most people forget to count these calories because they’re a “drink” and not a “food”. Don’t let yourself be tricked by liquid calories. Always check the labels of everything you drink for calorie content. JUICE is the enemy - orange juice is at least 200 calories for every 16 oz. Imagine all the salad and veggies you could stuff yourself with instead of these calories that are not even half as filling as a big salad full of vitamins and zero sugar!
  • PUT THINSPO PICS EVERYWHERE! On your walls, on the fridge, everywhere! But be careful when your friends or parents come over, because they might want an explaination for having pictures of runway models on your refrigerator! But who cares - it is a constant reminder of your goals that you are fighting so hard to reach.
  • SWEET TOOTH. I have read a lot of websites that say “if you have a sweet tooth, eat a piece of fruit”. That’s great and I am very envious of you if that actually works out for you… but for many people, a piece of fruit isn’t the sugar they were hoping for. I really recommend “Lifesavers” wintergreen mints - they are 60 calories for every 5 mints (I usually only eat one if I am craving sugar, so that’s only 12 calories). Plus, as seen above, that fresh peppermint taste will actually eliminate cravings!
  • WWW.LIVEJOURNAL.COM - Ana can be very hard when you have no one around you to talk to about the downsides that go along with the lifestyle. That’s where having a journal is amazing. Journals aren’t just for middle school - if something is bothering you, if you feel like shit during a fast, or you want to write about your progress, livejournal.com is an awesome site that I use about twice a day and it’s completely free! Another great thing about it is that when you write a post, at the very bottom of the screen, you can select “Just Me”, and then only you can read it, even if someone stumbles across your page online.
  • WORK ON YOUR POSTURE - standing up straight and tall actually makes you look thinner - slouching isn’t very beautiful or feminine! I really like to wear high heels when I am fasting - firstly, to make me feel feminine and beautiful, second, to improve my posture, and third, to remind me that I am going to be strong today. Sounds silly, but it’s a great reminder. I also read a million times that you burn more calories if you are sitting up straight or standing than if you are slouched over!
  • SLEEP! You actually burn 90 calories every hour that you are asleep, so if you sleep 8 hours, that’s 720 calories!!! That would take about 2 hours to do in the gym on a cardio machine! Sleep is great because you can’t get hunger pains in your sleep, you feel more energized even if you don’t have the food in your body to energize you, and it relaxes you, fighting off those stressful feelings and unhappiness that sometimes can accompany an ED.
  • READ INSPIRATIONAL BOOKS - I am not talking about Richard Simmons type inspiration - I am talking like, if you have a favorite person that gives you thinspiration, check to see if she/he has an autobiography or a biography! Reading about your favorite thinspirational person’s life can be very inspirational to you. I like to read one chapter of a good book right before I fall asleep to calm me down, and I am not an avid reader. It’s just a great way to unwind and get some inspiration for the upcoming day.
  • MAKE AN ANA FRIEND. Forums and discussion boards about ana are a great way to find a friend that you can talk to and share ideas with. It really feels great to be able to tell someone “I haven’t eaten in 2 days and I feel great” - when most people would be shocked and tell you that you need therapy. Not only does it feel great to get those words out, but it’s also helpful to get new tips and ideas from your friend.
  • BECOME A VEGETARIAN. The title alone “I am vegetarian” basically means that you have to eat veggies! Vegetables are guilt free and delicious. Since I’ve been vegetarian, I have kicked frozen foods, bread, etc. without even thinking about it, since I gave myself that new title. Plus, there are a lot of studies that prove that eating meat is not good for your body physically … not to mention the fact that a steak is over 500 calories, without the sauce included! Plus, look at those cute little chickens and cows - would you rather pet an animal or shove it down your throat and straight to your hips and ass?
  • WEAR A RING - this is just a good way to track your progress. The ring I wore 4 months ago has been resized down an entire size since ana has come into my life. The ring will obviously not help with weight loss, but it’s very satisfying when you have to take your ring in to be resized, since you are so thin now, even your fingers are getting skinny!
  • LOOK BEAUTIFUL, FEEL BEAUTIFUL. In general, if you are sitting around in sweat pants and your hair in a ratty ponytail, you probably won’t be as motivated to get thin and beautiful  than if you are wearing sexy tight jeans, a nice fitted shirt, and your hair is done up nice and your face is decorated with just the right amount of makeup. Jewelery is awesome too - feel beautiful. Even if you are not doing anything that day - even if you are just doing dishes and housework, wear those heels and feel fabulous - this will inspire you to look and feel your best, which includes being thin and having the body you desire.
  • GET ON TOP! Sex can be about as intense as naptime for a woman, or she can get a full body workout - it’s up to you! If you lay there like a slab of meat on your back, you probably won’t be losing as many pounds as you would if you were on top, initiating the pleasure!
  • WEAR BROWN BLUSH - of course, this depends on your skin color, but a darker tone of blush that creates the illusion of a cheek bone shadow can be very sexy. Be discrete, though, - too much is too much, even if it is very sexy!
